Array Rep Power:       53 Reputation:       8730 Interesting to have a metal album that isn't Aenima for 1996 Damon. Not a Tool fan?
In hindsight, I'll replace Demanufacture with WTS(MG)? which I forgot about when I made my list.Well, Your Honor. We've plenty of hearsay and conjecture. Those are kinds of evidence.

Array Rep Power:       24 Reputation:       3414 Do like Tool, just prefer that particular album for that year.
I was a huge Pantera fan growing up, but looking back, I find TGSTK to be their best album (whereas most people consider it one of their poorer efforts), mainly because they went outside their usual territory both musically and lyrically. Really a very interesting album all round. Listening to Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display of Power now, I just find them a bit meathead and dated TBH. Reinventing the Steel is just Pantera-by-numbers, and Far Beyond Driven is just boring.
Surprisingly easy list to make really, in that I had plenty of ready choices for each year.Last edited by Damon_3388; 15th February 2012 at 06:54 PM.

Array Rep Power:       10 Reputation:       1343 Had a look back on 1996: Top Albums of 1996 - Rate Your Music , was an interesting year really, right between the two most awesome years for music since I was born, 1995 and 1997, it was a fairly dull year in comparison.
It was a very lacklustre year for non black metal metal albums on the whole besides Aenima and the three mentioned below , and the beginning of the death/ thrash rot.
Was a fairly good year for black metal though, . Not one Death or Thrash album of note in that 1000 album list except for the Black/Thrash Aura Noir.
Opeth - Morningrise
Amorphis - Elegy (Probably second best album of 96 for me, maybe only Swans Soundtracks for the Blind pips it)
Katatonia- Brave Murder Day.
Some Black Metal Awesomeness:
Burzum -Filosofem
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
Summing- Dol Gulthur
Ulver -Kveldssanger
Blut aus Nord -Memoria Vetusta I: Fathers of the Icy Age
Arcturus -Aspera Hiems Symfonia
Bathory -Blood on Ice
Aura Noir -Black Thrash AttackLast edited by Zarrix; 15th February 2012 at 06:38 PM.

Array Rep Power:       53 Reputation:       8730 Brave Murder Day was my second choice for that year. My second favourite Katatonia album after Night is the New Day.
And fair call on Pantera Damon. I'm definitely with you on the "liking songs/albums from favourite bands which aren't popular" thing. Always a bit of a letdown when bands come out on tour and don't play <track 13 from a less popular album>
EDIT: Disagree on VDOP though. Every time I chuck it on after a long layoff, Mouth for the War blows my mind like it did the first time I heard it.
Zarrix, what do you think of Kvelertak? I've been listening to a bit of them lately because they're supporting Mastodon and Gojira (I still can't get over how fucking good that pairing is
) and as a non-black metal fan, really like them because they actually have distinguishable riffs to go with the general Scandinavian goodness of most black metal bands. Well, Your Honor. We've plenty of hearsay and conjecture. Those are kinds of evidence.

Array Rep Power:       10 Reputation:       1343 Stanton: They go all right. Do have that punk element to their music though with their black metal elements, the former isn't really my greatest liking, but they do have a fairly original and cool brand of music. So I'll definitely see them at soundwave if they don't clash with anything major.
It's this time of year I wish I lived in Melbourne. Some absolutely carchinderously brilliant sideshows this year. Mastodon and Gojira is such a mindblowingly awesome combo, I think I'd be creaming myself all night if I were to actually go to that. Paradise Lost and Cathedral is just as awesome, The best two Doom/ Goth Metal acts of the 90's in one venue? Dayum. And Devin and Meshuggah is worth a mention as well.

Array Rep Power:       10 Reputation:       1343 I did use the yearly lists to assist in the creation of my album list. Helped me remember a few albums that I'd either forgotten the release year , or forgotten about at the time. Those lists are the best way to find new music. Feel like going through each year and listening to some albums that catch my attention.

Array Rep Power:       53 Reputation:       8730 They clash with Lamb of God for me, so no chance of seeing them at the festival, but will definitely have a look before Gojira.
I keep forgetting how amazing this lineup is. I get excited for a handful of bands, then I listen to another band who's playing.
I reckon there might be 10 minutes where I'm filling in time, probably between Slipknot and Machine Head.Well, Your Honor. We've plenty of hearsay and conjecture. Those are kinds of evidence.

Array Rep Power:       10 Reputation:       1343 Only time I'm really struggling to fill is between Mastodon and Watain (about two hours), would have been a perfect time for Devin, who I'll unfortunately miss
. Got a choice between Manson, Staind, a couple of random shit pop punk bands and iirc a fairly average act on the metal stage.
But best festival lineup Australia has seen for some time I'd say.

Array Rep Power:       4 Reputation:       391 1994 was by far my hardest year to pick.
Quality albums such as the following missed my list:
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
The Offspring - Smash
Blur - Parklife
Live - Throwing Copper
The Cranberries - No Need to Argue
Green Day - Dookie
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
Bush - Sixteen Stone
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Bad Religion - Stranger Than Fiction
Weezer - Weezer (The Blue album)
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Nirvana - Unplugged in New York
Oasis - Definantly Maybe
Damn good year for music that one. I'm not even a rap fan, but I'm guessing there would've been classic albums released by rap artists that year as well.
