    i know that this is a vague question, as it depends on the person/ the persons objectives in targeting different areas of the body, how would an hour at the gym compare to an hour in the pool?

    What are you aiming for? Pool is great cardio but isn't ideal for weight loss and obviously muscle gain.

    To be honest i'm pretty keen on building muscle, but i just don't gym. Figured that as swimming uses most muscles in the body, it would tone the muscles. I guess the next question is, is there a substitute for Gym that builds muscle?

    whoever says swimming isn't good for building muscle is wrong. swimming is resistance training. resistance training builds muscles. it's just a lot slower than lifting is

    another good alternative is gymnastics - male gymnasts, just like swimmers, don't lift many weights. but again it takes a lot longer to see results than lifting does

    I've been swimming for ages, it builds a good base but going to the gym is a level above.

    swimming = dem shoulders.

    Swimming can be good for weight loss, but is typically harder than for running, or requires much more discipline. One of the reasons for this is body temperature and the effect it has on your appetite.

    During/after a run you feel pretty hot, and normally don't feel like eating for a while after, or don't feel like eating that much. But after being in the water for a while you cool down a bit (even if the pool is heated the difference between body temperature and water temperature is approximately 10 degrees, and water takes much more heat out of you than air). When you cool down it increases your appetite, and is generally the reason why after swimming you feel like demolishing food. So it's not that swimming won't promote weight loss, but running and swimming have different affects on your appetite.

    Swimming will develop your upper body, but not as much as weights for a similar reason to why weights will develop your legs more than running. Running/swimming is lots of repetitions at less resistance, weights are much less repetitions at high resistance.

    As Triptane says, one of the biggest things is food. I have friends who used to swimming 6 days a week and they would demolish a shitload of food. So if you're trying to lose weight, after a swimming session you are going to want to dominate dem carbs. It's amazing how much swimmers eat. A mate of mine stopped swimming yet kept his same diet and he bloated out.

    You also become buoyant in the water, so you don't burn as much energy to move. Since fat floats, the more fat you have the more you'll need to swim to burn calories. It's also easier to maintain your body temperature swimming in a pool than it is doing exercise on land.

    but surely pushing away water is more strenuous on the body than pushing air

    Yep, you will still chew up plenty of energy when swimming. It's not weight bearing but you are moving through a much more viscous fluid in a ridiculously inefficient way (we were not born to swim).
