    What I don't get about The Shire is why that particular part of NSW is known as 'The Shire', and people recognise exactly where you're talking about when you mention it, when there's not only a bunch of other shires in that state, but around the rest of Australia as well.

    Yeah but a bay is a distinctive geographical feature of a particular area (and not every area has a bay, so it's kind of unique), whereas 'shire' is just another term for "district" or "local government area". What's so special about Sutherland Shire that makes it the local government area in all of Australia?
