Don't know how well the start of the speech will go down (because its not all that PC/patriotic/popular to point out the "mystification" of such a worshipped entity), but on the whole its pretty good. The last paragraph is spot on

yeah, I thought I'd hit a different angle. Sick of hearing stories about how they ran around fearlessly killing Japs/Turks/Krauts/VC etc. Whilst it helps to console the veterans who went through a hell of a lot of shit, it certain glorifies something that isn't all that glorious.

I wonder what they would say if I took a shit load of the pennies and two pence pieces I have down to Morrison's (supermarket like Coles) and put it in their self serve machine. I've got about 3 Pounds worth of them here and want to get rid of them. Wonder if they would get mad at me for doing it.

Dont think anyone really wins a battle when so many People are killed. 8700 Australians and 2700 Kiwi's seems a lot, but 45 000 poms, 15 000 French and 60 000 turks were also killed.

Also am doing some volunteer work for the RSL that day.

Yeah, I'm by no means degrading their effort. I think by highlighting how gruesome war is, it shows people exactly how brave these guys were in participating in it. However, I also don't think glorifying warfare is the way of the future, we can learn much better lessons from these courageous servicemen and women than simply "they kicked arse and defended our country."

Haha im not volunteering, it's my job. $45 an hour and still get to go to the footy that arvo
