Array Rep Power:       53 Reputation:       8564 I was just illustrating how opinion works. I think the speed limits are ok, just as I think the drinking limit is ok.
Way too many people die from drinking & speeding related accidents each year but will lowering the limits make it better? I doubt it.
Drink driving has started to become something that is frowned upon - even if its slightly over the limit, which is a good thing.
However speeding at slightly over the limit is deemed to be ok - no demerits just a small fine and not really even frowned upon by peers.
You may be able to argue being slightly over the alcohol limit is worse than speeding a little - but is it really?

Array Rep Power:       53 Reputation:       8564 Exactly. Could say drink driving is harmless too because Dave from down the road has done it a couple of times and never crashed.
r dub the statement that doing 10kmph over the limit is harmless is one of the stupider things I've heard from you.

I know I'm on my high horse here but I'm sure we all do it at least a little.

Array Rep Power:       10 Reputation:       1343 Speed limits are quite conservative in Australia, in most cases too much so. You could increase limits by at 5kph across the board, possibly 10 in some areas and have no notable increase in injury and fatalities.
The worst case is the Forrest highway to Bunbury. It's 80-90kph in some areas. ffs, it's a basic stretch of road with little danger. The government sets speed limits below reasonable natural limts to get more revenue.

but I think Australia needs to be conservative because of the number of dickheads there are. There is also a different culture in Australia regarding driving than in Europe. There is no way an autobahn would work in Australia.. ever.
