I think its more of a case that today people wont invest the money required to get this type of shit going on.

Pyramids being built required a shit load of slaves etc. Just not going to get that sort of stuff happening these days.

Hard to say whether some of the things you're referring to could be replicated but I think if you throw enough money into it, with the technology we have now, anything is possible.
