In response to the OP, what is a realistic solution? Obviously we can't have it so any distance can be a mark, and having lines all over the field to indicate 15m wouldn't be that great either. Plus, a rule that leaves it up to the umpires discretion (eg, "if the umpire believes it has travelled sufficient distance") would just create more grey areas and inconsistency.

What if it hits a players hands in a pack after travelling 14m, then he dives back and marks it on the second grab at 16m?

Also, how do you plan to make this cost-efficient and have it not affect the weight/aerodynamic nature of the ball?

Umps can use obviousness like there sight to see it wasnt kicked.

Cost efficient through sponsorship. Not effecting the weight and aerodynamics by deducting the weight off the ball with the added chip, keeping the balls simikarly weighted. Put the chip flush in the middle of the ball too and surround it with rubber casing
Shutup. If I wanted too I could come down there and beat you like a rented mule, or a mule for purchase. Bottom line is if there is livestock involved, ill beat you like it

Obvously putting line markings is impossible and horribly impractical. It's a 360° game, it works in rugby and American football as those games are 180°.

There isn't any realistic solution. I would just suggest doing away with the rule and going back to how the game was always played for 100+ years. This rule hasn't been around that long but doesn't serve much of a purpose. Hawthorn's entire gameplan is built around short kicking out of defence, half those kicks probably go less than 10m anyway.

Like I posted: you can obviously tell when the ball has gone 3m, but can anyone definitively tell when a ball has travelled 12m? 14m? 20m? Nope, I sure can't, neither can umpires. So get rid of the rule all together.

Imagine the problems that would create though, teams could control the ball at will by just chipping it 5m every time instead of handballing.

After reading the title I thought it was a St Kilda type thing going on here...

    Pedobear approved thread...

I dont understand why the grass isn't cut in a certain way so that a patch is 10m (or even 15m) squared. They're already in dark and light square/rectangular column patterns. Would make life much easier for the adjudication, and you don't ruin the game with ridiculous markings on the ground.
    Things more accurate than Melbourne:

Should we get rid of having to bounce the ball too?

In the early days they didn't have a 15 metre rule but they cut it back as, the obvious conclusion, players started doing little short kicks to each other to improve their angle on goal etc
