The great Michael Hurley.

Shut down by the almighty Matty Warnock last night, keep an eye on this guy, he's going to be the greatest forward ever because he's just so competitive. He rarely gets the ball in threatening areas, but it's okay, he's so competitive.

Essendon coach James Hird was excited by the news of Hurley's signing.

"Getting Michael Hurley to re-sign at Essendon is a fantastic sign that we’re going in the right direction. To have a quality young man sign for five years is great."

He described Hurley as the best competitor seen at Essendon in the past 25 years, admitting to "little doubts in his mind" about whether Hurley would sign, the longer negotiations continued.

"He’s such a hard man on the field and such a competitor… but off the field he’s a very caring, compassionate person who will be a future strong leader of this football club.

He is the best competitor people who have been around club have seen in 25 years. When he gets on the field his competitive nature is the best they have seen. He’s got fantastic skill, his closing speed – his last five metres into the ball are you
watch him speed up, which is very rare, most people slow down.
